Both systems work. The Leapster 2 (Toy Story), sometimes you have to wiggle the cartridge to get it to read the cartridge and even then, sometimes it's just stubborn and wont read certain cartridges until you've loaded it 3 or 4 time. The price reflects this. Both consoles have loaded learning material that is available w/o using any cartridge loaded at all.
